Call for Image Submissions: 2022 Ohio Archives Month Poster

This year for the annual Society of Ohio Archivists’ October Archives Month poster we are looking for archival image submissions having to do with Healthcare in Ohio. For the past two years, healthcare professionals throughout the country have helped us through a pandemic, so this topic is in the forefront for many. With this in mind, we decided to highlight archival holdings related to all aspects of healthcare for this year’s poster, which will be distributed for Archives Month in October.

Does your archive have images related to local hospitals, health clinics? Photos of doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals? Images related to vaccination clinics, health crises, medical tools, or other healthcare related events or activities? All of these are examples for wonderful submissions! Continue reading →

Recordings & Speaker Slides from Fall 2021 Meeting Available

The 2021 annual Ohio Local History Alliance and Society of Ohio Archivists fall meeting (virtual), was held Thursday September 30-Saturday October 2, with the theme of Challenge Accepted: Overcoming Obstacles.

Call for Nominations: 2022 SOA Merit Award

The SOA Membership & Awards Committee seeks nominations for the 2022 Society of Ohio Archivists Merit Award.

The award is given to individuals or organizations that have by excellence in deeds, actions, or initiatives improved the state of archives in Ohio over the past year. The award will be presented at the SOA Annual Meeting, which will be held on May 20, 2022 in Columbus.

Applications are due by April 1 8th, 2022.

Nominations should include the following information:

Name of nominee;
Nominee’s employer or institution;
Nominee’s mailing address, phone number, and email address;
Brief reason for nomination;
The nominator’s contact information so that the awards committee may contact you for additional information.

Call for Applications: 2022 SOA Scholarships

The Society of Ohio Archivists is pleased to announce four scholarships available to students (2 awards), and new archival professionals (2 awards) with three years or less experience in the workplace. The award will be presented at the SOA Annual Meeting, which will be held in person on May 20, 2022 in Columbus. Applications are due by April 8, 2022.

The scholarship consists of registration to the SOA annual meeting (including lunch), a one-year SOA membership, and a $100 travel stipend. Awardees are required to submit a photograph and write about their experience for publication in the Ohio Archivist newsletter.

The Membership & Awards Committee is responsible for soliciting applications and submitting recommendations to Council. Awards are announced and presented at the Annual Meeting on May 20.

How to Apply: Applications should include the following information:

Applicant’s name, mailing address, and email address.
Students should list their school’s name and academic program;
New professionals should list their employer and number of years working within the field;
Description about how the meeting will benefit the applicant professionally;
Brief description of the applicant’s scholarship and contribution to archives. This will be taken into consideration along with the applicant’s number of years in the field or academic study;
Statement of the applicant’s need for financial support to attend the conference;

CFP Extended: 2022 SOA Annual Meeting: Archives and Sustainability

The Call for Proposals for the Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting: Archives and Sustainability has been extended until Friday, January 28.

SOA is (planning) to return to meeting in person in Columbus, Ohio for its 2022 Annual Meeting to be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at the beautiful Columbus Metropolitan Main Library in Columbus.

This year the Educational Planning Committee welcomes proposals that explore the theme of Sustainability as it relates to sustaining the projects, people, and ideas that drive our field as well as how we respond as a profession to environmental sustainability. The committee welcomes submissions relating directly to the theme, along with a broad array of other topics.

SOA Council Statement on HB327 and Legislation that Restricts History Education

January 10, 2022— As Ohio’s professional association of archivists, the Society of Ohio Archivists stand in firm opposition to Ohio HB327. As archivists we collect, preserve, and make accessible historic documents that allow people to study and learn from the past. We vehemently oppose any legislation that infringes upon free speech and interferes with the teaching and research work of not just archivists, but librarians, teachers, professors, and workplace educators.

By prohibiting “divisive concepts” in education, HB327 attempts to inhibit the archival profession and the day-to-day work of archivists. Archives, especially those housed in public colleges and universities, will be unable to collect and share material that fully reflects the experiences of all Ohio’s people. As those charged with collecting and preserving the primary sources upon which historical narratives are based, it is vitally important that our collections document an accurate view of the past including those who have faced discrimination based on their race, sex, gender, ethnicity, or other characteristic. All Ohioans deserve to see themselves reflected in the historical record. The silences in the archives that HB327 creates will change the way current and future generations understand and learn from the past. Continue reading →
