Keeping History Alive

Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting

Friday, May 19, 2017

To be held at the Quest Business and Conference Center, 8405 Pulsar Place, Columbus, OH 43240.

Deadline to submit proposals: Monday, January 9, 2017, 5pm.

The SOA 2017 Program Committee seeks a broad array of creative proposals, sessions and posters, related to archival work today and into the future. All proposal topics are welcome.

Possible ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Tools for archival discovery, maintenance, and/or marketing
  • Outreach and instruction efforts
  • Student, intern, and volunteer experiences and projects
  • Funding for archival projects or archival facilities
  • Unique collection development ventures
  • Preservation, description, and access to analog, born-digital, or hybrid collections

The Program Committee encourages proposals of panel sessions, student and professional posters, as well as alternative formats such as debate, fish bowl, lightning, mini-workshop, pecha kucha, world café, and other session formats that encourage interaction between presenters and attendees.

The Program Committee also encourages proposals from students*, new professionals*, first time presenters and attendees, as well as individuals from related professions, including those from outside of Ohio.

Proposals must include:

  • Session/Poster title and type
  • Abstract of 250 words describing the session/poster and how it will be of interest to SOA attendees
  • Description of 150 words for the printed program
  • Main contact’s information and any other participants
  • A/V or technology requirements
  • Any additional special needs

OLHA/SOA Fall Meeting, October 7-8, 2016

The Society of Ohio Archivists is partnering with the Ohio Local History Alliance for Connecting Communities. This conference will be held on October 7-8, 2016, at the Crown Plaza hotel in Dublin, Ohio.

The SOA track will take place on Friday October 7th and will feature the following sessions:

• 9:00-9:50: Bringing History Home: Using Local Government Records in the Classroom with Elise Kelly, Greene County Records Center & Archives
• 10:10-11:00: A Private Matter: Dealing with Privacy-Sensitive Materials in the Archives with Judith Wiener, Health Sciences Library, The Ohio State University and Emily Gainer, Cummings Center for the History of Psychology
• 11:20-12:10: Preserving & Digitizing the Kent Tribune Newspaper with Jenni Salamon, Ohio History Connection and Sandy Halem, Kent Historical Society
• 2:10-3:00: Thinking Outside the Hollinger Box: Creative Ways to Promote Your Archives with Natalie Fritz, Clark County Historical Society; Kevlin Haire, The Ohio State University; Elise Kelly, Greene County Records Center and Archives; and Karen Robertson, Ohio History Connection
• 3:20 -4:10: Perspectives on Archival Processing with Connie Conner, Ohio History Connection; Cara Gilgenbach, Kent State University Libraries; Abigail E. Miller, Kenyon College; and Rhonda Rinehart, Cummings Center for the History of Psychology

Attendees are welcome to attend any of the Local History Alliance sessions, luncheons, and other special events on both Friday and Saturday.

Fall 2016 Ohio Archivist now online

The Fall 2016 Ohio Archivist is now available. Although it wasn’t the initial plan, this issue in many ways focuses on student archivists and new professionals. Feature articles by Madeleine Fix and Kelly Francis-Love discuss a student capstone project and an internship respectively. In Newcomers, Christine Schmid Engels “rethinks” the role of interns and volunteers. Also in this issue, Dan Noonan’s DiGITaL article sheds light on the ten year history of the SAA Research Forum. In addition, you’ll read about the goings-on of SOA members and member institutions, Ohio grant information, and as usual, a recap of our annual meeting and the announcement for the coming fall meeting. The Miami Valley Archivists Roundtable (MVAR) Archives Crawl

The Miami Valley Archives Roundtable (MVAR) Archives Crawl is an event held during the month of October to celebrate National Archives Month. Crawlers tour host archives in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas gathering stamps in their passports. Participants will have the opportunity to view a variety of treasures preserved in area archival repositories, visit with archivists, and go on special behind-the scenes tours, depending on the specific repositories that you visit.

Celebrate Archives Month by Honoring the Accomplishments of an Ohio Archival Institution

The Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board Achievement Award recognizes significant
accomplishments in preserving and improving access to historical records, in any format, by
an Ohio archival institution.

All Ohio institutions responsible for archival records that provide public access to at least a
portion of their collections are eligible. Eligible accomplishments include recent special
projects or on-going programs that:

  • build significant collections
  • implement successful preservation strategies
  • enhance access to archives
  • develop effective digitization programs

Preference will be given to projects or programs that can be adapted for use by other
institutions.

Because the award recognizes institutional achievements, individuals are not eligible.
Departments employing members of OHRAB are not eligible, but other departments in their
institutions are eligible.

Nominating letters should be no longer than two pages, 12-pt, single spaced, describing the
institution’s program/project along with its goals, accomplishments, and significance. Each
must include the nominee’s institutional name along with a contact person’s name, mailing
and email addresses, and phone number.

“I Found It in the Archives” 2016 Voting Begins Today, August 15th

The 2016 state-wide “I Found it in the Archives” contest features winning essays from three institutions: Oberlin College Archives/Oberlin Heritage Center, Greene County Archives, and the Clark County Historical Society.

Read the 2016 “I Found it in the Archives” state finalist essays on the “I Found it in the Archives” Contest Entries page and vote for your favorite in the side navigation of any page on the SOA website.

Voting begins August 15, 2016 and ends August 31, 2016.

In an effort to keep everyone up-to-date Council wanted to share a listing of our current committees, committee chairs and Council liaisons. You may note that we have five new committee chairs: Janet Carleton (Educational Programming); Andrew Harris (Public Information); Elise Kelly (Advocacy and Outreach); Collette McDonough (Educational Programming); and Cate Putirskis (Membership). Please join me in welcoming them to their new positions. I would also like to take this time to thank our outgoing chairs for their service: Shelley Blundell (Educational Programming); Ron Davidson (Membership); and Jennie Thomas (Advocacy and Outreach).
