CFP Extended: 2022 SOA Annual Meeting: Archives and Sustainability

The Call for Proposals for the Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting: Archives and Sustainability has been extended until Friday, January 28.

SOA is (planning) to return to meeting in person in Columbus, Ohio for its 2022 Annual Meeting to be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at the beautiful Columbus Metropolitan Main Library in Columbus.

This year the Educational Planning Committee welcomes proposals that explore the theme of Sustainability as it relates to sustaining the projects, people, and ideas that drive our field as well as how we respond as a profession to environmental sustainability. The committee welcomes submissions relating directly to the theme, along with a broad array of other topics.

Extended deadline to submit proposals: Friday, January 28, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. See the Annual Meeting page for much more detail and the submission form.

SOA Council Statement on HB327 and Legislation that Restricts History Education

January 10, 2022— As Ohio’s professional association of archivists, the Society of Ohio Archivists stand in firm opposition to Ohio HB327. As archivists we collect, preserve, and make accessible historic documents that allow people to study and learn from the past. We vehemently oppose any legislation that infringes upon free speech and interferes with the teaching and research work of not just archivists, but librarians, teachers, professors, and workplace educators.

By prohibiting “divisive concepts” in education, HB327 attempts to inhibit the archival profession and the day-to-day work of archivists. Archives, especially those housed in public colleges and universities, will be unable to collect and share material that fully reflects the experiences of all Ohio’s people. As those charged with collecting and preserving the primary sources upon which historical narratives are based, it is vitally important that our collections document an accurate view of the past including those who have faced discrimination based on their race, sex, gender, ethnicity, or other characteristic. All Ohioans deserve to see themselves reflected in the historical record. Call for Nominations: President-Elect/Vice President, Treasurer, Council Member

The Society of Ohio Archivists Nominating Committee would like to announce a call for nominations for three positions: one Council member, Treasurer, and Vice President/President-Elect. Self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged, as are peer nominations. All positions are for two-year terms of office and begin in May 2022.

Candidates must be current SOA members in good standing and be willing and able to attend regular Council meetings and business activities (both in-person and virtually).

The election will be held during the SOA Annual Business Meeting held during the SOA Annual Meeting on Friday, May 20, 2022. Candidates will be required to write a response to a question to be printed in the Ohio Archivist prior to the election.

Ohio Archives Month 2021 Poster: Ohio’s Wonderland

The 2021 theme for the Ohio Archives Month poster was Ohio’s Wonderland: Unboxing The Great Outdoors. For the past year and a half, many have been cooped up indoors and apart from others more than ever before, but the outdoors have always offered an escape! The SOA Advocacy and Outreach Committee invited repositories and institutions across the state to submit their photographs, documents, or other graphical materials that highlight Ohio’s outdoor spaces. We received submissions on the theme from 23 institutions, for a total of 65 photographs and documents! The submissions were compiled, and 10 images were selected as winners through online voting by you. We were able to feature 3 of these images on this year’s Archive Month poster.

Behind-the-Scenes Archives Tour @ Miami University Showcasing Rick Ludwin & Gene Krebs Collections

For Archives Month, Candace Pine, manuscripts librarian, takes us on a 10-minute behind-the-scenes tour of the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and University Archives at Miami University, showcasing two collections in particular: Gene Krebs, former member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Rick Ludwin, former NBC executive (Primetime, Late Night, and Specials).

SOA Strategic Planning Committee: Call for Nominations

The Society of Ohio Archivists Strategic Planning Committee is seeking two At-Large members, each for a different term. SOA’s current Strategic Plan ends in 2021, so this is your chance to help craft our vision and goals of the future!

The Strategic Planning Committee works with Council and is responsible for monitoring SOA’s mission, long-term vision, and development. The committee will track SOA’s progress towards reaching the goals and objectives laid out in SOA’s most recent Strategic Plan and aid in the development of future goal. To join the committee, you must be an SOA member of good standing.
