This May, the Society of Ohio Archivists Annual Meeting will be traveling to Dayton, Ohio! You are invited to join us on Thursday, May 11 for virtual sessions, and on Friday, May 12 at the Dayton Metro Library Main in downtown Dayton, Ohio, for a full day of in-person presentations, networking, and exciting featured speakers.

Yes, this year we are going hybrid! The virtual registration option will provide access to two standalone virtual sessions on Thursday May 11 (also available to attendees with the in-person option) and live streams of select sessions from the Friday May 12 slate. As our first attempt at a hybrid conference this will be a learning opportunity for all of us, so please bear with us if we encounter any unexpected kinks/challenges.

Keynotes

Morning Keynote: Mackensie Wittmer

Mackensie Wittmer will be welcoming attendees to the Dayton-Miami Valley area and presenting on the impact and importance of collaboration within the cultural heritage community.

Wittmer has served as the executive director of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance since 2018. The National Aviation Heritage Area is one of 62 national heritage areas designated by Congress as having a cohesive, distinctive landscape of historic and cultural resources of national importance. It shares our nation’s aviation story sustaining the legacy of the Wright brothers and all men, women, and flying machines that changed our world. Wittmer works closely with the National Park Service, National Museum of the USAF, other aviation heritage organizations, and numerous informal partners to leverage cultural heritage as an economic catalyst in the region.

Afternoon Keynote: Rosemary Pleva Flynn

Rosemary Pleva Flynn will be discussing what it means to be an archivist, focusing on the intersection of archival work among memory workers, storytellers, community archivists, and “traditional” archivists, and the role we all play in preserving culture and knowledge.

Flynn is currently the principal librarian and archivist at the Energy & Environmental Research Center Library, University of North Dakota, where she has been employed since 2002. Prior to her position at the EERC, she was project archivist for Indiana University’s Electronic Records Project. She serves as chair of the Society of American Archivists’ Dictionary Working Group, which publishes the online Dictionary of Archives Terminology; the Academy of Certified Archivists Regent for Exam Administration; and regularly teaches professional workshops.

For our first hybrid conference we have many options! Registration fees for both the full meeting and virtual only option are tiered. In order to keep up with a changing world, the registration fees have increased. Additionally, lunch is now optional.

Silent Auction

Each year SOA offers four scholarships, two to current students and two to recent graduates, using funds from our raffle / silent auction. The scholarships consist of conference registration (including lunch), a one-year membership to SOA, and a $100 travel stipend. The funds raised from the silent auction are critical to SOA’s support of students and new professionals. This year we are putting together a fun group of items. You will be able to bid on the silent auction items in person on Friday.
